Fire effects and post-fire restoration: lessons learned from large fires

2008/07/07 - 2008/07/09 Under the umbrella of the PHOENIX Project centre, our colleagues from the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain), in collaboration with the government of Galicia, are organizing a conference on the topic “Fire effects and post-fire restoration: lessons learned from large fires”, on the 7-9 July 2008. This will also provide a major opportunity to gather the “PHOENIX family”, so I ask you to give priority to this event next year.

Oral presentations are welcomed, and the topics of this conference will include:

1. Fire effects (on soil, water, vegetation, landscape) and estimation of fire severity (field measurements, remote sensing, prediction models, etc.).

2. Risk assessment (ignitions, fire, floods and soil erosion, tools for risk assessment).

3. Economic valuation of fire damages.

4. Short-term (emergency) intervention techniques: experiences and effectiveness.

5. Longer-term rehabilitation (defining objectives, soil preparation and plant species selection, natural regeneration, resilience, landscape-level planning): experiences and effectiveness.

Besides applied research on each of the topics, state-of-the-art reviews are also welcomed.

Official languages will be Spanish and English (with simultaneous translation). A maximum of ca. 80 participants is expected.
